We have no puppies at this time. I am not planning a litter until possibly summer of 2013.
Tips for purchasing a Bernese Mountain Dog:
The Bernese Mountain Dog Club of America STRONGLY recommends that all breeding stock be tested and clear of the genetic diseases that are inheriant for BMDs.
Orthopedic Foundation for Animals- (OFA)
Checks for hip and elbow dysplasia. Do not take anyone's "word" that their dogs are OK because there has never been a "problem."
I have had many dogs over the past two decades who were not orthopedically sound, yet never limped a day in their lives. Ask to see proof from OFA that the parents have been certified. The clearances can also be checked on the OFA website at
www.offa.org
Degenerative Myelopathy - (DM)
An inherant problem in Bernese that comes on about 8 yrs of age.
Sometimes earlier, sometimes later. There is a genetic test for it
available to breeders and owners from OFA. A puppy's parents
should be tested for this disease. Ask your breeder if it has been.
You can Google it and learn more.
Proggressive Retinal Atrophy - (PRA)
An inherited genetic disease of the retina that causes blindness. This disease is present in many lines of Bernerse. There is NO genetic test for it. Again, it can be Googled to learn more. Most breeders use Canine Eye Registry Foundation to clear breeding
parents.
Subvalvular Aortic Stenosis - (SAS)
An inherited disease of the heart. It is genetic but mode of
inheritance is not known. A current echo-cardiogram of breeding stock or even having had one done on the parents at one time is very helpful. Results are also registered in OFA.
Histiosarcoma, Hemangiosarcoma and Lymphoma -
The most common forms of cancer in the Bernese Mountain Dog.
Do not let anyone tell you their dogs are free from cancer. There is not a Berner pedigree (family line) on the planet that is free from these cancers. Histio is believed to be genetic, altho no marker has
been found to date. There are NO genetic tests for these cancers.
These cancers are so common in the BMDs, that the life
expectancy is around 7 yrs of age, worldwide.
The bottom line is, BE EDUCATED! Make EDUCATED choices. DO
YOUR RESEARCH! You can't fix what you don't acknowledge.
Much research can be done at www.berner.org on the world wide Bernese Berner-Garde database. More can be done at www.offa.org
